Color, Charm and Crocus

Crocuses are hassle free plants that offer pleasing color and plenty of charm to their surroundings. These lively perennials look best in large groups and, given their easy, clean culture, are immensely popular in small gardens. Icing on the cake- you can also grow crocuses in containers and use them in planters or window boxes! The average height of crocus plants is 4-8 inches which makes them top contenders for underlining large shrubs or perennials.

Crocuses thrive in bright locations with well drained soil. You can plant crocus bulbs in autumn or early winter. Make sure to clear out the weeds and work in good quantities of organic material before planting. Set the bulbs at a depth of 3-4 inches, the pointed side facing up. Keep the soil moist, especially in the first couple of weeks after planting. Come spring, the goblet shaped flowers will unfurl their vibrant petals and fill the surroundings with their entrapping aroma.

Attractive as they are, crocuses don’t find much favor with deer, rabbits or squirrels. But that’s perfectly okay, isn’t it? A fine layer of mulch will keep your plants safe during the freezing winter months. Fertilize crocuses immediately after they bloom, using a balanced fertilizer.

Growing crocuses is amongst the simplest and the most satisfying of all gardening activities. It’s also one that I’d strongly recommend to every fellow gardener.
