ABOUT BULBS: SUMMER FLOWERING
As new gardeners we're taught that flower bulbs are planted in the fall and bloom in the spring. Then we soon learn that's not always the case. Some of the most beloved summer blooms, including dahlias, begonias, lilies, columbines and gladiolus, begin as spring-planted bulbs or tubers. These easy-care flowers offer brilliant colour and drama from early summer to fall and are go-to blooms for summer bouquets. When looking for bulbs to plant in spring, keep hardiness zones in mind. Many summer-blooming bulbs cannot survive freezing temperatures in the ground and must be lifted in the fall for winter storage.
