What Makes Asiatic Lilies Unique?

Planting Asiatic Lilies
Asiatic lily bulbs are both the earliest bloomers and easiest to care for of the lily family. Simply provide these Dutch bulbs with well draining sandy or loamy soil and six to eight hours of sun. We recommend planting Asiatic lilies in well turned soil about 6 inches deep, with the pointed end facing up. Place the bulbs about 9 to 12 inches apart, or in clusters of three or four. Like all lilies, these bulbs should be planted in the fall, before the first frost. Most varieties are hardy in zones 3 to 8. These perennials return year after year, and will propagate fresh bulbs. Divide the lilies and replant the new bulbs after blooming has finished.

One of the wonders of the Asiatic lily is how many types there are. From tall stalks with a single glorious bloom per branch to shrub-like plants loaded with blossoms, and even lilies with double blossoms, the selection is astounding. Consider a mix of colours and sizes for your garden. Carpet border lilies reach about 18 inches tall and make delightful borders and walkways, while other varieties can reach 3.5 feet tall and make stunning focal points or backdrops. These lilies all make wonderful companions for lower growing flowers, and a bed of brightly coloured Asiatic lily blooms paired with poppies, white allysum or variegated hostas is a sight to see.
