Bee Balm Plants

Monarda, also called bee balm or bergamot, is a classic American wildflower. They're a favourite of butterflies and hummingbirds!

Entice wildlife to your yard with fragrant Bee Balm. These lovely plants flower throughout the summer months and come in a range of gentle hues, including pinks, reds, mauves, lilacs, whites and blues. Soft star bursts of fringed blooms arrive in abundance, filling the space with their bergamot aroma and bright colours. Bee balms' sweet nectar attracts butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and other pollinating insects, so you can enjoy a fantastic spectacle while aiding propagation, naturally.

These native North American sun perennials, also known as Monarda bee balms, are extremely low maintenance. Fast growing, even in low fertility conditions, they require little attention. Bee balm will thrive in a range of light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. Generally hardy in zones 4 to 9, these perennials will come back year after year. With their rapid growth and high tolerance for neglect, bee balms are an excellent choice for naturalising and make a delightful ground cover. Use them in woodland gardens, on roadside edges or to fill in empty spaces. Small varieties, growing to about 12 inches, work well in containers and rock gardens. Large varieties can grow up to 48 inches tall and make wonderfully fragrant border plants or foundation plantings. Add bee balms to your herb garden, as well. A member of the mint family, the leaves have a delicious aroma and can be used to brew teas.

Gardening with native plants is an excellent way to support your local wildlife. Easy to grow, bee balms are a friendly introduction to native gardening and a fine addition to existing native plantings. Their long lasting flowers are also perfect for floral arrangements; plant a variety and share a bouquet with friends. Invite Mother Nature to your garden with bee balm.
